FILEF PRESENTS THE WEIRD MOB 3 FILM FESTIVAL

The Weird Mob 3 festival consists of eight feature films and eight short films that portray the migration experience where Italians are the hosts.
Today nearly five million migrants who are escaping violence, persecution and hunger populate Italian cities, villages and countryside.
How are Italians adapting to the introduction of different cultures and religions? How are migrants settling [more]

in?
The movies included in this festival explore, also in a comical way, another side of Italy where Italians, in a bizarre role reversal, have to learn how to overcome discrimination, intolerance and accept cultural diversity. The same issues that they, as migrants to other countries, had to face not so long ago.
The Weird Mob 3 is about acceptance and hope. It provides an insight into the life of those who leave their homelands trying to find a better life in Italy. Click here for more information.

'VAMPIRE' UNEARTHED IN VENICE PLAGUE GRAVE

Italian researchers believe they have found the remains of a female 'vampire' in Venice, buried with a brick jammed between her jaws to prevent her feeding on victims of a plague which swept the city in the 16th century.

Matteo Borrini, an anthropologist from the University of Florence, said the discovery on the small island of Lazzaretto Nuovo in the Venice lagoon supported the medieval [more]

belief that vampires were behind the spread of plagues like the Black Death.

(Reuters) An undated photo from the University of Florence shows the remains of a female 'vampire' from 16th-century Venice.

'This is the first time that archaeology has succeeded in reconstructing the ritual of exorcism of a vampire,' Borrini told Reuters by telephone. 'This helps ... authenticate how the myth of vampires was born.'

The skeleton was unearthed in a mass grave from the Venetian plague of 1576 -- in which the artist Titian died -- on Lazzaretto Nuovo, which lies around three km (2 miles) northeast of Venice and was used as a sanitorium for plague sufferers.

The succession of plagues which ravaged Europe between 1300 and 1700 fostered the belief in vampires, mainly because the decomposition of corpses was not well understood, Borrini said.

(Reuters) An undated photo from the University of Florence shows the remains of a female 'vampire' from 16th-century Venice.

Gravediggers reopening mass graves would sometimes come across bodies bloated by gas, with hair still growing, and blood seeping from their mouths and believe them to be still alive.

The shrouds used to cover the faces of the dead were often decayed by bacteria in the mouth, revealing the corpse's teeth, and vampires became known as 'shroud-eaters.'

(Reuters) Forensic anthropologist Matteo Borrini from the University of Florence in an undated photo. Italian researchers believe they have found the remains of a female 'vampire' from 16th-century Venice, buried with a brick in her mouth to prevent her feasting on plague victims. Borrini said the discovery was the first confirmation of a Medieval belief that vampires were behind the spread of epidemics, such as the Black Death.

According to medieval medical and religious texts, the 'undead' were believed to spread pestilence in order to suck the remaining life from corpses until they acquired the strength to return to the streets again.
'To kill the vampire you had to remove the shroud from its mouth, which was its food like the milk of a child, and put something uneatable in there,' said Borrini. 'It's possible that other corpses have been found with bricks in their mouths, but this is the first time the ritual has been recognized.'

While legends about blood-drinking ghouls date back thousands of years, the modern figure of the vampire was encapsulated in the Irish author Bram Stoker's 1897 novel 'Dracula,' based on 18th century eastern European folktales.

IN ITALY, A VENDING MACHINE EVEN MAKES PIZZA

ROVERETO, Italy — Is Europe bringing back the automat? Claudio Torghele hopes so.

Over the last decade, Mr. Torghele, 56, an entrepreneur in this northern Italian city who first made money selling pasta in California, has developed a vending machine that cooks pizza. The machine does not just slip a frozen pizza into a microwave. It actually whips up [more]

flour, water, tomato sauce and fresh ingredients to produce a piping hot pizza in about three minutes.

The machine, which Mr. Torghele calls Let’s Pizza, is only the spearhead of a trend. Restaurants reminiscent of the old Horn & Hardart chain in the United States, which are fully automatic, are also showing up around the Continent.

Unlike the old automats (the last Horn & Hardart closed in 1991), which were staffed with workers who refilled the machines with creamed spinach and baked beans as fast as customers pulled them out, these restaurants consist entirely of vending machines.

In Milan, a two-hour drive west of Rovereto, a franchise chain called Brekky has opened the first three of what is planned to be a large chain of restaurants in which customers can buy cold dishes like salads and sandwiches, and warm dishes like pasta, from vending machines.

North of the Alps, the automat never really died out. In the Netherlands, Febo, a chain started in 1941 by a Dutch baker, now has about 60 restaurants. In France, bright green and yellow Yatoo Partoo machines — the name loosely translates as ā€œYou can get everything, everywhereā€ — sell milk, juice, snacks and sandwiches 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The European vending machine industry, which has grown significantly and now has annual sales of about 26 billion euros, or $33 billion, hopes the trend will catch on.

Much recent growth came with the placing of vending machines in factories and offices, where employees took coffee breaks or lunch from machines. But as recession bit into Europe and factories and offices closed, that market has contracted.

At the same time, Europeans are looking for less expensive ways to eat out, and the automat is far less expensive than a white-tablecloth restaurant.

ā€œThese are developments that we are watching,ā€ said Luciano Iannuzzi, chief executive of Argenta in Carpi, Italy, a large vending operator with about 120,000 machines.

The idea for a pizza robot came to Mr. Torghele after he worked in California in the mid-1990s creating a fresh pasta manufacturer. ā€œAt food courts I saw a trend toward vending machines,ā€ he said at his office in this mountain town. ā€œIn fast food, I saw pizza everywhere.ā€

With backing from a Dutch investment fund, his own capital and money from friends, he set to work. A plan to simply miniaturize industrial technology for producing frozen pizza failed, but by 2003 Mr. Torghele had produced a machine ready to be tested in Chicago and shown at a trade fair in Orlando, Fla.

That same year, with the help of Unilever, the British-Dutch food giant, he test-marketed 20 machines in Germany. ā€œWe had a bicycle,ā€ he said. ā€œNow we had to pedal.ā€

Lucio Tonina/SITOS

The Let’s Pizza vending machine at a shopping mall in Trentino, Italy. It can turn flour, water, tomato sauce and fresh ingredients into hot pizza in a few minutes for a price as low as US$4.50.

The machine Mr. Torghele and his engineers produced is outfitted with little windows so the customer can watch the pizza being made. As in the Charlie Chaplin film ā€œModern Timesā€ (in miniature and without Chaplin) wheels turn and gears grind. The customer presses a button to choose one of four varieties — margherita (plain cheese and tomato sauce), bacon, ham or fresh greens. A plastic container dumps flour into a drum resembling a tiny washing machine; a squirt of water follows, and the drum goes into a spin cycle, forming a blob of dough that is then pressed flat to form a 12-inch disk.

Tomato paste is squirted onto the dough and cheese is added before it is lifted into a small infrared oven. The baked pizza then slips onto a cardboard tray and out into the customer’s waiting hands. Mr. Torghele says the pizza will cost as little $4.50, depending on the variety.

It is not surprising that the new drive to offer fresh-made food is coming from Italy. Italians may be legendary for long lunches of pasta and wine, but they also lead Europe in vending machines, with more than 614,000 installed, compared with 593,000 in France and 562,000 in Britain, according to the European Vending Association in Brussels.

Much of Italy’s strength in vending comes from coffee. An Italian coffee vending machine may offer up to 18 different varieties, including espresso, cappuccino, ristretto, lungo and macchiato.

But with coffee markets increasingly saturated, machine manufacturers are casting about for new products to push, like books, DVDs, scarves and handkerchiefs, even model cars and trains.

Operators are also increasingly offering fresh produce, like apples, and other healthy food at schools and fitness centers.

ā€œVending hasn’t arrived at the end of the road,ā€ said Mr. Iannuzzi, 52, of Argenta. ā€œIt’s mature, but it’s growing.ā€

Argenta reflects the opportunities that vending offered to investors. In 2005, Argenta was snapped up by Advent International, a British equity fund, which turned around and sold it in late 2007 to an Italian fund, Cognetas. In that time, Argenta had doubled its annual revenue, to $260 million, partly through acquisitions and partly through growth.

Now, with the economic crisis spreading across Europe, the industry faces a different landscape. On the one hand, as factories close, potential vending machine sites disappear. On the other hand, as consumers find themselves with less cash, the lower-priced items in vending machines become attractive.

Where does this leave Mr. Torghele and his pizza machine? Initially, he thought the United States would be his primary market, but he learned that market would be hard to penetrate. Instead, when his machine goes into regular production this summer, he will be focusing on Italy and its neighbors. But vending machine prices there average about $2,600, and his machine will sell for $32,000.

Still, experts in the business are not discouraging. ā€œYou have to have a location; you have to understand where to go with that machine,ā€ Mr. Iannuzzi said. ā€œBut there is a future for that.ā€

URGENT ITALIAN LANGUAGE PETITION

Please see the letter below form the President of Co.As.It. Sydney:

1 December 2008

Dear Friend/Colleague,

RE: URGENT PETITION

I write on behalf of the Board of Directors to seek your support.
The Italian Government is proposing a dramatic reduction in funding for the promotion of Italian [more]

language and culture abroad of up to 50% starting from 2009.

If this decision is confirmed the teaching of Italian in Australia via Co.As.It.'s Insertion classes in State and Catholic Schools will be dramatically affected with large reductions of students learning Italian to be estimated in the thousands.

It remains difficult at this time to assess the exact future repercussions, however we are sure that the position of the Italian language, culture and community itself, for which generations of Italians worked hard to achieve in Australia will be placed at great risk.

The General Committee of Italians Abroad (CGIE), a worldwide representative body, has organised a petition to be presented to the Italian Government to appeal such a decision.
Ā
In order to sign this electronic petition you need to visit the following website:

The website is in Italian and we hope you will be able to complete it. Please note that one of the compulsory fields is labelled CAP. In Italian CAP stands for Postcode (Codice Avviamento Postale), please enter your Australian postcode and AUS if you wish.

I kindly ask you to share this letter with family, friends, colleagues, students and anyone who shares an interest in the maintenance and promotion of Italian language and culture in Australia.
I thank you in advance for your support.

ROME NOT BUILT IN A DAY, EVEN FOR GOOGLE EARTH

A computerised reconstruction of Ancient Rome viewed from above the Circus Maximus.

GOOGLE Earth has added a new function to its 3D map collection: time travel.

Launched in the Italian capital this week, Rome has become the first ancient city documented on Google Earth, allowing internet users to visit the sprawling city as it would have appeared in 320AD when Emperor Constantine ruled [more]

over the city's 1 million inhabitants.

See ancient Rome in 3D. A new high tech theatre will give tourists a deeper look at life in the Italian capital in the ancient past.

Using a physical model put together by archaeologists between 1933 and 1974, the virtual ancient Rome was recreated by an international team including the University of Virginia and the University of California, Los Angeles.

Professsor Bernard Frischer, of the University of Virginia, said the project took a decade to pull together using laser scans of today's ruined monuments and advice from archaeologists. It was completed last year.

He said the program, a 'virtual time machine', would prove an invaluable tool for the study of ancient Rome and the Roman Empire.

The computer-generated images allow visitors to dart across town without the hassle of traffic which clogs contemporary streets, cross the Tiber River, inspect the engraved marble facades and enter 11 buildings including the Senate, Forum of Julius Caesar and the Colosseum. The city's 21-kilometre-long walls have been re-created and pop-up windows provide information on more than 250 sites.

In all, almost 7000 buildings have been re-created — a significant improvement on the roughly 300 original ruins that still stand.

Google Earth chief technology advocate Michael Jones said it was the culmination of years of work by scholars, historians, artists and others.

More than 400 million people have downloaded Google Earth since 2005. See http://earth.google.com/rome/

AS WE SAY IN OZ: AV-A-GO-YA-MUG! -- COME DICIAMO IN OZ: AV-A-GO-YA-TAZZA!

Most of us here at Italy Online were born outside of Italy, and as such, Italian is our second language. Because of this, we have been a little reluctant to translate our posts from English into Italian. We were always afraid of posting articles that would butcher the beautiful language.

Despite our concerns, we have decided to 'Av-a-go', and from now [more]

on we will endeavour to post all items in both English and Italian. This, however, comes with responsibilities for you as well. For those of you who consider yourselves proficient in the Italian language, your tasks will be to laugh at our mistakes, and get it out of your system, but then we would love to have your suggestions as to what would be a better way to translate a particular item that you believe we may have botched. We will then post your suggestions to the particular item that you believe we may have screwed up.

If you like, we can post your name or initials along with your suburb, city or town with the post. We are hoping to have some fun with this, but of course, the idea is to ensure that we get the translation as correct as possible.

Don't be concerned if you think that your suggestion is not absolutely correct, we will not send the 'Carabinieri' after you, the whole intent is to have some fun and to improve everyones Italian language skills while doing it.

Did you know that even the mighty 'Googleā„¢ Translate' asks it's users to suggest a better translation, so that they may improve the translation quality in future updates of their system?

So 'Av-a-go-ya-mug!' and send your suggestions to
info@italyonline.com.au. Simply indicate which article and/or line you would like to suggest as an improved translation. We will then place your suggestion in the article.

Come diciamo in Oz: Av-a-go-ya-tazza!

WORD OF THE WEEK No. 36

Italy Onlineā„¢ announces this week's PAROLA DELLA SETTIMANA. 'Panna' which means cream. The word 'panna' is seldom used here in Australia when referring to a drink or dessert with cream. More often than not, the word 'crema' is used. This, however, is incorrect. Crema [more]
is custard in English. Yes, even the Italian-English dictionaries offer crema as an Italian translation for cream, but again, this is incorrect. So from now on, when you order your coffee with cream, ask for CaffĆØ con panna! ;-)

WORD OF THE WEEK No. 35

Italy Onlineā„¢ announces this week's PAROLA DELLA SETTIMANA. 'Fattoria' which means farm. The word here in Australia has been used to refer to factory, but this is incorrect. Factory in Italian is fabbrica. Farm has incorrectly been referred to as farma. There is no such word in the Italian [more]
vocabulary.

Fattoria was chosen as this weeks word of the week because a new CD has just been added to the IOLĀ® Shopping Mercato. It is called 'Nursery Songs - Canzoncine' and is produced by The Bilingaroos. Of course, one of the songs on the CD is 'Old MacDonald Had A Farm / Il Vecchio MacDonald Ha Una Fattoria'. Click on the CD Cover image below for more details and to purchase this wonderful CD:

BEFANA FESTIVAL AT THE FORUM NEXT SUNDAY 6TH JANUARY
On the 6th January from 5 pm the Italian Forum Piazza will be abuzz with the Festival of the Befana. The day will be filled with entertainment for children including a puppet show by Murphy’s Puppets and an entertaining and highly amusing musical performance by Mic Conway. The highlight will be the arrival of BEFANA the benevolent Italian witch who [more]
bears gifts for the children who have been good – and ā€œcharcoalā€ for those who have not! Click on this link for more information in the 'IOLĀ® Events Calendar'.

La Befana is a character in Italian folklore, similar to Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus. The character may have originated in Rome, then spread as a tradition to peninsular Italy.

Her name derives from the festival of Epiphany, and she visits all the children of Italy on the eve of 6 January to fill their socks with candy if they are good or a lump of coal if they are bad. Being a good housekeeper, many say she will sweep the floor before she leaves. The child's family typically leaves a small glass of wine and a plate with a few morsels of food, often regional or local, for Befana.

She is usually portrayed as an old lady riding a broomstick through the air wearing a black shawl and is covered in soot because she enters the children's houses through the chimney. She is often smiling and carries a bag or hamper filled with candy, gifts, or both. To learn more about La Befana click on this link, thanks to Wikipedia.

New Nativity Scene to be unveiled at Vatican

Art Expert Says It Highlights Father's Role in Christ's Birth

VATICAN CITY, DEC. 2007 (Zenit.org).- The unique Nativity scene in St. Peter's Square is a reminder from our teaching Pope of a father's importance in the family, says Christian art expert Elizabeth Lev.

This year's Nativity scene in the square, to be unveiled Christmas Eve, will have a new twist, the Vatican Secretariat of State reported last week. Rather than a manger or stable, the Nativity scene will feature the home of St. Joseph, reflecting the story of the birth of Christ depicted in St. Matthew's Gospel instead of the typical passage from St. Luke.

Lev, who is also a ZENIT columnist, said: 'This Nativity is not so much a break with tradition but is presenting a new side of the Nativity, revealing a new facet.

'It is trying to represent Joseph's experience, his dream of what will happen knowing that Jesus will be born and Mary is with child. He had no idea the way it would all work out as he prepared to take on this task given to him by God through a message of an angel. So it is what he imagines in his home amid his work before it comes to pass.'

'This fits Joseph and the acceptance of his call into the story,' Lev continued. 'Joseph is never the star of the Nativity, but his role is crucial. So this is not upsetting biblical tradition, but [giving] a different facet, looking at it in a different light.'

The art historian explained: 'In the Nativity accounts, a mother figure is always there, but this Nativity makes present the importance of the father figure and the fact that he is essential. It's a reminder that he wasn't born only to a mother, while providing a source of meditation during this time when we are faced with the battle against marriage and the family. It is a good way for the Church, in nonaggressive and nonpolitical way, to remind us of the basis of our understanding of family through the Holy Family.

'This is a Nativity very much of Joseph Ratzinger, a teaching Nativity. Instead of complacently laying out the characters, this year they are being laid out in a way so we have to think about what this momentous birthday means, think about the circumstance in which Jesus is born, while reminding us of Joseph's essential role.'

IOLĀ® DIRECTORY & IOLĀ® SHOPPING MERCATO UPDATED
Attention Italy Onlineā„¢ Members and Users. We at Italy Onlineā„¢ are constantly striving to improve and update the website. Two important improvements were made to the site on Friday 21-12-07. The first was a layout change to the Directory Listings. Previously, the Address and Text boxes were laid out side by side.Ā  The new layout places the Address and Text boxes on top of each other.Ā  This allows [more]
for the better formatting of the business directory listings that have long website and email links.Ā  It also makes the text box easier to read.Ā  The second improvement has been made to the Shopping Mercato facility.Ā  Previously, the text and image field for each of the products were confined to the right third of the page.Ā  The new layout fills in the right two thirds of the page.Ā  This allows for easier reading of product descriptions and the installation of much larger images without having to click on a hyperlink to open up a separate browser page.

Please view these changes by clicking on the 'Directory' and/or 'IOL Shopping' links in the main title menu bar and navigating to the directory members and the individual shopping products.

Remember to support the 'Directory' members as they support Italy Onlineā„¢.

Also note, we are always interested in your feedback and suggestions. If you have any questions, requests or suggestions please do not hesitate to use the tools available to you in the 'Contact' page whichĀ are also on the main title menu bar.

WORD OF THE WEEK No. 34

Italy Onlineā„¢ announces this week's PAROLA DELLA SETTIMANA. 'Concubina' which means courtesan or concubine.Ā While doing research on this 16th-century portrait painted in oil on a poplar panel by Leonardo Da Vinci, the word struck me as appropriate to describe the mysterious person in the painting.

Mona Lisa, or La Gioconda was painted in Florence between 1503 and [more]
1506. It is thought to be of Lisa Gherardini, wife of a Florentine cloth merchant named Francesco del Giocondo - hence the alternative title, La Gioconda. However, Leonardo seems to have taken the completed portrait to France rather than giving it to the person who commissioned it. It was eventually returned to Italy by Leonardo's student and heir Salai. It is not known how the painting came to be in FranƧois I's collection.

It is arguably the most famous painting in the world, and few other works of art have been subject to as much scrutiny, study, mythologizing and parody.

The portrait may have been painted to mark one of two events - either when Francesco del Giocondo and his wife bought their own house in 1503, or when their second son, Andrea, was born in December 1502 after the death of a daughter in 1499. The delicate dark veil that covers Mona Lisa's hair is sometimes considered a mourning veil. In fact, such veils were commonly worn as a mark of virtue. Her clothing is unremarkable. Neither the yellow sleeves of her gown, nor her pleated gown, nor the scarf delicately draped round her shoulders are signs of aristocratic status.

The history of the Mona Lisa is shrouded in mystery. Among the aspects which remain unclear are the exact identity of the sitter, who commissioned the portrait, how long Leonardo worked on the painting, how long he kept it, whetherĀ the portrait is actually of a female, and how it came to be in the French royal collection.

At his death in 1525, Leonardo's assistant Salai owned the portrait named in his personal papers la Gioconda which had been bequeathed to him by the artist. Italian for jocund, happy or jovial, Gioconda was a nickname for the sitter, a pun on the feminine form of her married name Giocondo and her disposition.

Co.As.It. has been providing frail aged and dementia specific daycare groups across Sydney since the 1980's. These groups have provided an important means of socialisation and respite for the frail aged as well as increasing the quality of life of both participants and carers. It is well known that as culturally and linguistically diverse communities age/experience dementia, they tend to revert to their native language, decreasing the use of English. As our community continues to age, our waiting lists are growing and it is important for Co.As.It. to direct its support services appropriately - where there is the greatest need.Ā

We seek the aid of the greater community in order to help us meet the changing needs of our ageing migrant community.

WE MOURN THE LOSS OF LUCIANO PAVAROTTI

Today, we were all saddened at learning of the death of Luciano Pavarotti, at the young age of 71.Ā  Below, please find information on his life, where he grew up, his training and musical experiences, etc. Also see a short video of his performance of 'Nessun Dorma' at the Torino Winter Olympics in our IOLĀ® Interactive page.

Luciano Pavarotti (October 12, 1935 – September 6, 2007) was an [more]

Italian tenor and one of the most popular contemporary vocal performers in the world of opera and across multiple musical genres. Known for his televised concerts, and as one of the Three Tenors, Pavarotti was also noted for his award-winning charity work for raising money on behalf of refugees and the Red Cross.

Early life
Luciano Pavarotti was born on the outskirts of Modena in north-central Italy, the son of Fernando Pavarotti, a baker and singer, and Adele Venturi, a cigar factory worker.[1] Although he spoke fondly of his childhood, the family had little money; its four members were crowded into a two-room apartment. According to Pavarotti, his father had a fine tenor voice but rejected the possibility of a singing career because of nervousness. World War II forced the family out of the city in 1943. For the following year they rented a single room from a farmer in the neighboring countryside, where young Pavarotti developed an interest in farming.

Pavarotti's earliest musical influences were his father's recordings, most of them featuring the popular tenors of the day — Beniamino Gigli, Giovanni Martinelli, Tito Schipa and Enrico Caruso. At around the age of nine he began singing with his father in a small local church choir. Also in his youth he had a few voice lessons with a Professor Dondi and his wife, but he ascribed little significance to them.

After what appears to have been a normal childhood with a typical interest in sports — in Pavarotti's case soccer above all — he graduated from the Schola Magistrale and faced the dilemma of a career choice. He was interested in pursuing a career as a professional soccer player, but his mother convinced him to train as a teacher. He subsequently taught in an elementary school for two years but finally allowed his interest in music to win out. Recognizing the risk involved, his father gave his consent only reluctantly, the agreement being that Pavarotti would be given free room and board until age 30, after which time, if he had not succeeded, he would earn a living by any means that he could.

Pavarotti began serious study in 1954 at the age of 19 with Arrigo Pola, a respected teacher and professional tenor in Modena who, aware of the family's indigence, offered to teach without remuneration. Not until commencing study with Pola was Pavarotti aware that he had perfect pitch. At about this time Pavarotti met Adua Veroni, whom he married in 1961. When Pola moved to Japan 2½ years later, Pavarotti became a student of Ettore Campogalliani, who was also teaching Pavarotti's childhood friend, the now well-known soprano Mirella Freni. During his years of study Pavarotti held part-time jobs in order to help sustain himself — first as an elementary school teacher and then, when he failed at that, as an insurance salesman.

The first six years of study resulted in nothing more tangible than a few recitals, all in small towns and all without pay. When a nodule developed on his vocal chords causing a 'disastrous' concert in Ferrara, he decided to give up singing. Pavarotti attributed his immediate improvement to the psychological release connected with this decision. Whatever the reason, the nodule not only disappeared but, as he related in his autobiography, 'Everything I had learned came together with my natural voice to make the sound I had been struggling so hard to achieve.'

CareerĀ  - 1960s–1970s
Pavarotti made his opera début in the role of Rodolfo in La bohème on April 29, 1961 in the town of Reggio Emilia. He made his American début with the Greater Miami Opera in February, 1965 singing in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor opposite Joan Sutherland on the stage of the Miami-Dade County Auditorium in Miami. The tenor scheduled to perform that night was ill and had no understudy. As Sutherland was traveling with him on tour, she recommended the young Pavarotti as he was well acquainted with the role.

Shortly after, on April 28, Pavarotti made his La Scala debut in La bohĆØme. After an extended Australian tour he returned to La Scala where he added Tebaldo from I Capuleti e i Montecchi to his repertoire on March 26, 1966, with Giacomo Aragall as Romeo. His first appearance as Tonio in Pagliacci took place at Covent Garden on June 2 of that year.

He scored another major triumph in Rome on November 20, 1969 when he sang I Lombardi opposite Renata Scotto. This was recorded on a private label and widely distributed, as were various takes of his I Capuleti e i Montecchi, usually with Aragall. Early commercial recordings included a recital of Donizetti and Verdi arias (the aria from Don Sebastiano was particularly highly regarded), as well as a complete L'elisir d'amore with Sutherland. His major breakthrough in the United States came on February 17, 1972, in a production of Donizetti's La fille du régiment at New York's Metropolitan Opera, in which he drove the crowd into a frenzy with his nine effortless high Cs in the signature aria. He achieved a record 17 curtain calls. From then on he began to make frequent television performances, such as in his role as Rodolfo (La bohème) in the first Live From The Met telecast in March of 1977, which attracted one of the largest audiences ever for a televised opera. He won many Grammy awards and platinum and gold discs for his performances. In addition to the previously listed titles, his La favorita with Fiorenza Cossotto and his I puritani with Sutherland stand out.

He made his international recital dĆ©but at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri in 1973 as part of the college’s Fine Arts Program. Perspiring before the debut, he asked for a handkerchief and was given a white dinner napkin. The prop was a signature part of his act ever since.

1980s–1990s
At the beginning of the 1980s, he set up The Pavarotti International Voice Competition for young singers, performing with the winners in 1982 in excerpts of La bohĆØme and L'elisir d'amore. The second competition in 1986 staged excerpts of La bohĆØme and Un ballo in maschera. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of his career he brought the winners of the competition to Italy for gala performances of La bohĆØme in Modena and Genoa and then to China where they staged performances of La bohĆØme in Beijing. To conclude the visit, Pavarotti performed the first ever concert in the Great Hall of the People before 10,000 people, receiving a standing ovation for nine effortless high Cs. The third competition in 1989 again staged performances of L'elisir d'amore and Un ballo in maschera. The winners of the fifth competition accompanied Pavarotti in performances in Philadelphia in 1997.

Pavarotti's pivotal step in becoming an internationally known celebrity occurred in 1990 when his rendition of Giacomo Puccini's aria, 'Nessun Dorma' from Turandot, became the theme song of the BBC TV coverage of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. The aria achieved pop status and has, to date, remained his trademark song. This was followed by the hugely successful Three Tenors concert held on the eve of the World Cup final at the ancient Baths of Caracalla in Rome with fellow tenors PlƔcido Domingo and JosƩ Carreras and conductor Zubin Mehta, which became the biggest selling classical record of all time. Throughout the 1990s, Pavarotti appeared in many well-attended outdoor concerts, including his televised concert in London's Hyde Park which drew a record attendance of 150,000. In June 1993, more than 500,000 listeners gathered for his performance on the Great Lawn of New York's Central Park, while millions more around the world watched on television. The following September, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, he sang for an estimated crowd of 300,000. Following on from the original 1990 concert, Three Tenors concerts were held during the Football World Cups; in Los Angeles in 1994, in Paris in 1998, and in Yokohama in 2002.

On December 12, 1998 he became the first (and, so far, only) opera singer to perform on Saturday Night Live, singing alongside Vanessa L. Williams. He also sang with U2, in the band's 1995 song Miss Sarajevo.

In 1998, Pavarotti was presented with the Grammy Legend Award. Given only on special occasions, it has only been awarded 15 times since its first presentation in 1990 (as of 2007).

2000s
In 2002 Pavarotti split with his manager of 36 years Herbert Breslin. The breakup, which was acrimonious, was followed in 2004 with the publication of a book by Breslin entitled The King & I, seen by many as sensationalist and largely critical of the singer's acting (in opera), his ability to read music and learn parts, and of his personal conduct, although acknowledging their mutual success. In an interview in 2005 with Jeremy Paxman on the BBC, Pavarotti rejected the allegation that he could not read music, although acknowledging he sometimes had difficulty following orchestral parts.

He received Kennedy Center Honors in 2001 and currently holds two Guinness World Records: for receiving the most curtain calls — at 165 — and for the best selling classical album (this album is In Concert by The Three Tenors and is thus shared by fellow tenors, PlĆ”cido Domingo and JosĆ© Carreras).

In 2003 he released his final compilation, Ti Adoro, which has Pavarotti singing in more of a 'popera' style.

On 13 December 2003 he married his former personal assistant, Nicoletta Mantovani, with whom he already had a daughter, Alice.[5] He started his farewell tour in 2004, at the age of 69, performing one last time in old and new locations, after over four decades on the stage.

Pavarotti gave his last performance in an opera at the New York Metropolitan Opera on March 13, 2004 for which he received a 12-minute standing ovation for his role as the painter Mario Cavaradossi in Giacomo Puccini's Tosca. On December 1, 2004, he announced a 40-city farewell tour to be produced by Harvey Goldsmith.

On February 10, 2006, Pavarotti sang 'Nessun Dorma' at the 2006 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony in Turin, Italy. The final act of the opening ceremony, his performance received the longest and loudest ovation of the night from the international crowd. See this video in our IOL Interactive page.

Shortly after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Pavarotti died on September 6, 2007 at his home in Modena, Italy.

Film and television
Pavarotti's one venture into film, a romantic comedy called Yes, Giorgio (1982), was roundly panned by the critics. He can be seen to better advantage in Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's adaptation of Rigoletto for television, released that same year, or in his more than 20 live opera performances taped for television between 1978 and 1994, most of them with the Metropolitan Opera, and most available on DVD.

Health
March 2005, Pavarotti underwent neck surgery to repair two vertebrae. In June of the same year, he had to cancel a Three Tenors concert in Mexico due to laryngitis.

In early 2006, he had back surgery and contracted an infection while in the hospital, forcing cancellation of concerts in the U.S., Canada and the UK.

Final illness and death
Pavarotti was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July 2006 and required emergency surgery to remove the tumor. Shortly after surgery he was reported to be 'recovering well.' His remaining appearances for 2006 were canceled because of his ongoing cancer treatment; however, his management stated that it was anticipated that his farewell tour would resume in early 2007.[7]

On Thursday, August 9, 2007, he was hospitalized for observation in his hometown of Modena, in Northern Italy, hospital officials there said. Hospital spokesman Alberto Greco declined to give the reason the 71-year-old tenor was hospitalized, but local daily Il Resto del Carlino reported that it was pneumonia. Announcement of his 'imminent release' was made on August 15, 2007, but with no date cited. The report stated that he planned to return to recording his 'sacred songs' and teaching his young pupils. [8] On August 21, it was announced that he was being treated in the cancer ward, given tests related to his pancreatic cancer, and would not be released for another few days.[9]

On September 5, 2007, Italy's AGI news agency reported that Luciano Pavarotti's health had deteriorated and the 71-year-old singer was in a 'very serious condition'.[10] He was reported to be in and out of consciousness multiple times, suffering kidney failure.[11]

Luciano Pavarotti died in the early morning of September 6, 2007 at home surrounded by his wife and four daughters. In an email statement, his manager wrote, 'The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life. In fitting with the approach that characterized his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness.'[12] In a text message to Reuters, Pavarotti's manager Terri Robson confirmed: 'Luciano Pavarotti died one hour ago'.[13]

Family
Pavarotti's mother, Adele Venturi Pavarotti, died in 2002, aged 86. His father, Fernando, died less than five months later, aged 89.

Pavarotti is survived by four daughters, three with first wife Adua and one with second wife Nicoletta Mantovani, who gave birth to Alice in January 2003. He has one granddaughter.

Humanitarian work
Pavarotti annually hosted the 'Pavarotti and Friends' charity concerts in his home town of Modena in Italy, joining with singers from all parts of the music industry to raise money for several worthy UN causes. Concerts were held for War Child, and victims of war and civil unrest in Bosnia, Guatemala, Kosovo and Iraq. After the war in Bosnia, he financed and established the Pavarotti Music Center in the southern city of Mostar to offer Bosnia's artists the opportunity to develop their skills. For these contributions, the city of Sarajevo named him an honorary citizen in 2006.[14]

He performed at benefit concerts to raise money for victims of tragedies such as an earthquake in December 1988 that killed 25,000 people in northern Armenia.[15]

He was a close friend of Diana, Princess of Wales. They raised money for the elimination of land mines worldwide. He was invited to sing at her funeral service, but declined, as he felt he could not sing well 'with his grief in his throat'.

In 1998, he was appointed the United Nation's Messenger of Peace, using his fame to raise awareness of UN issues, including the Millennium Development Goals, HIV/AIDS, child rights, urban slums and poverty.[16]

In 2001, Pavarotti received the Nansen Medal from the UN High Commission for Refugees for his efforts raising money on behalf of refugees worldwide. Through benefit concerts and volunteer work, he has raised more than US$1.5 million, more than any other individual.[17]

Other awards he received for charity work include the Freedom of London Award and The Red Cross Award for Services to Humanity, for his work in raising money for that organization, and the 1998 MusiCares Person Of The Year, given to humanitarian heroes by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. WORD OF THE WEEK No. 27

Italy Onlineā„¢ announces this week's PAROLA DELLA SETTIMANA. 'Starnuto' which means Sneeze.Ā Click on the 'More' linkĀ below for all the various conjugations of the verb. Love the Italian language! WOW

A sneeze is a semi-autonomous, convulsive expulsion of air from the nose. This air can reach speeds of 300 mph. Sneezes spread disease by producing [more]

infectious droplets that are 0.5 to 5 µm in diameter. About 40,000 such droplets can be produced by a single sneeze.

Sneezing occurs when a particle (or sufficient particles) passes through the nasal hairs and reaches the nasal mucosa. This triggers the production of histamines, which reach the nerve cells in the nose, which then send a signal to the brain to initiate the sneeze. In certain individuals, sneezing can also be caused by exposure to bright light. This is called the photic sneeze reflex.

In recent years it has been shown that stifling or holding back sneezes can cause damage to the sinuses as well as the inner ear, this is due to the back flow of air pressure. The symptoms of this can include tinnitus, or reduced high frequency hearing, and in extreme cases, rupturing of the ear drum.

CIRA ANNOUNCES 'GUSTO 2007'

Gusto - An Exploration of Italian Regions
Sunday 26 August at Sydney Fish Market, Bank Street, Pyrmont
Australia has sometimes been described as Italy’s 21st region. Since the arrival of half a million Italians between the 1940s and 1980s, our national dish has become ā€˜spaghetti Bolognese’ and our national drink, cappuccino. But in adapting to the ingredients and tastes of a new continent, [more]

have the people who serve Italian food wandered too far from the source? This question will be explored at the 3rd annual Gusto, an Exploration of Italian Regions, an all-day event, featuring cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, ā€˜casalinga’ sessions teaching you how to create classic Italian foods in your own home, kids’ cooking classes and exhibitions and tastings from some of Sydney’s leading Italian chefs, producers, provedores and importers. La Sala degli Assaggi (The Tasting Room) will be open from 11am-3.30pm with tastings of risotto, polenta, Italian cold cuts (salami, mozzarella, prosciutto…), antipasto, seafood, gnocchi, testaroli and dolci prepared by restaurants and provedores including AC Butchery, Beppi’s, Fratelli Paradiso, Frati Restaurant, Lucio’s, Lario International and Kirks. QUITLINE ITALIANA IS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED!

Italy Onlineā„¢ was present for the official launch of the Quitline Italiana at Co.As.It. on Norton Street in Leichhardt, NSW on Wednesday morning.Ā

Minister Assisting the Minister for Health (Cancer) Verity Firth today officially launched Australia's first Italian language Quitline Service.Ā  Ms. Firth said the NSW Government's Quitline service took a record 57,000 calls year from smokers [more]

wanting to quit.

'Quitline is all about making it easier to kick the habit,' said Ms. Firth.

'However experience and commonsense tells us that smokers are less likely to quit when there is a language barrier between them and the advice to the State's large Italian community.

'Smokers who would like to seek advice on how to quit from an Italian speaking advisor should call 1 300 78 48 61.

The NSW Health Survery reveals that 18.1% of Italian-born men and 17.3% of Italian-born women are smokers.

'I would also like to acknowledge and personally thank the management and staff of Co.As.It. for their efforts and support.Ā  Without them the Italian Quitline would not have become a reality,' said Ms. Firth.

The Italian Quitline was a collaborative initiative involving Co.As.It., the Multicultural Health Communication Service, Quitline NSW and the Cancer Institute of NSW.

The Italian Quitline is the second multilingual service to be funded by the NSW Government, with an Arabic service already up and running.Ā  An answering machine service is also supporting other languages such as Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Greek, Korean and Spanish.

The key achievements of the NSW LaborĀ Government's decade long quit-smoking campaign include:

*Calls to the Quitline have more than doubled since 2004 to over 57,000;
*Between 2005 and 2006 the NSW smoking rate fell by 2.4 percentage points - the largest ever one year drop;
*An estimated 150,000 smokers have quit in the last three years, saving the State's economy between $1 and $2.5 billion over the next two decades.

'While the investment we are making is working, tobacco unfortunately remains the largest cause of preventable death and disease in NSW, responsible for more than 6,600 deaths each year as well as about 150 public hospital admissions every day,' said Ms. Firth.

'And if those statistics aren't enought, lifetime smokers should consider this fact: one in two will die from their habit, with a third of those deaths occurring in middle age!'

The NSW Government is committed to making further inroads into the State's smoking rate, with annual target reductions of 1 percentage point until 2010.

NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service is featured as a GoldĀ Listing within the IOLĀ® Directory.Ā  To learn more about their work and the services that they provide, please click on this link to be taken straight to their listing.
