| FILEF PRESENTS THE WEIRD MOB 3 FILM FESTIVAL |
The Weird Mob 3 festival consists of eight feature films and eight short films that portray the migration experience where Italians are the hosts. Today nearly five million migrants who are escaping violence, persecution and hunger populate Italian cities, villages and countryside. How are Italians adapting to the introduction of different cultures and religions? How are migrants settling [more] in? The movies included in this festival explore, also in a comical way, another side of Italy where Italians, in a bizarre role reversal, have to learn how to overcome discrimination, intolerance and accept cultural diversity. The same issues that they, as migrants to other countries, had to face not so long ago. The Weird Mob 3 is about acceptance and hope. It provides an insight into the life of those who leave their homelands trying to find a better life in Italy. Click here for more information. |

| 'VAMPIRE' UNEARTHED IN VENICE PLAGUE GRAVE |
Italian researchers believe they have found the remains of a female 'vampire' in Venice, buried with a brick jammed between her jaws to prevent her feeding on victims of a plague which swept the city in the 16th century.
Matteo Borrini, an anthropologist from the University of Florence, said the discovery on the small island of Lazzaretto Nuovo in the Venice lagoon supported the medieval [more] belief that vampires were behind the spread of plagues like the Black Death. (Reuters) An undated photo from the University of Florence shows the remains of a female 'vampire' from 16th-century Venice.'This is the first time that archaeology has succeeded in reconstructing the ritual of exorcism of a vampire,' Borrini told Reuters by telephone. 'This helps ... authenticate how the myth of vampires was born.' The skeleton was unearthed in a mass grave from the Venetian plague of 1576 -- in which the artist Titian died -- on Lazzaretto Nuovo, which lies around three km (2 miles) northeast of Venice and was used as a sanitorium for plague sufferers. The succession of plagues which ravaged Europe between 1300 and 1700 fostered the belief in vampires, mainly because the decomposition of corpses was not well understood, Borrini said. (Reuters) An undated photo from the University of Florence shows the remains of a female 'vampire' from 16th-century Venice.
Gravediggers reopening mass graves would sometimes come across bodies bloated by gas, with hair still growing, and blood seeping from their mouths and believe them to be still alive. The shrouds used to cover the faces of the dead were often decayed by bacteria in the mouth, revealing the corpse's teeth, and vampires became known as 'shroud-eaters.' (Reuters) Forensic anthropologist Matteo Borrini from the University of Florence in an undated photo. Italian researchers believe they have found the remains of a female 'vampire' from 16th-century Venice, buried with a brick in her mouth to prevent her feasting on plague victims. Borrini said the discovery was the first confirmation of a Medieval belief that vampires were behind the spread of epidemics, such as the Black Death.
According to medieval medical and religious texts, the 'undead' were believed to spread pestilence in order to suck the remaining life from corpses until they acquired the strength to return to the streets again. 'To kill the vampire you had to remove the shroud from its mouth, which was its food like the milk of a child, and put something uneatable in there,' said Borrini. 'It's possible that other corpses have been found with bricks in their mouths, but this is the first time the ritual has been recognized.' While legends about blood-drinking ghouls date back thousands of years, the modern figure of the vampire was encapsulated in the Irish author Bram Stoker's 1897 novel 'Dracula,' based on 18th century eastern European folktales. By Daniel Flynn ROME (Reuters) --- This article courtesy of Reuters Lifestyle section. Click here for more. |

| IN ITALY, A VENDING MACHINE EVEN MAKES PIZZA |
ROVERETO, Italy — Is Europe bringing back the automat? Claudio Torghele hopes so.
Over the last decade, Mr. Torghele, 56, an entrepreneur in this northern Italian city who first made money selling pasta in California, has developed a vending machine that cooks pizza. The machine does not just slip a frozen pizza into a microwave. It actually whips up [more] flour, water, tomato sauce and fresh ingredients to produce a piping hot pizza in about three minutes.
The machine, which Mr. Torghele calls Let’s Pizza, is only the spearhead of a trend. Restaurants reminiscent of the old Horn & Hardart chain in the United States, which are fully automatic, are also showing up around the Continent.
Unlike the old automats (the last Horn & Hardart closed in 1991), which were staffed with workers who refilled the machines with creamed spinach and baked beans as fast as customers pulled them out, these restaurants consist entirely of vending machines.
In Milan, a two-hour drive west of Rovereto, a franchise chain called Brekky has opened the first three of what is planned to be a large chain of restaurants in which customers can buy cold dishes like salads and sandwiches, and warm dishes like pasta, from vending machines.
North of the Alps, the automat never really died out. In the Netherlands, Febo, a chain started in 1941 by a Dutch baker, now has about 60 restaurants. In France, bright green and yellow Yatoo Partoo machines — the name loosely translates as “You can get everything, everywhere” — sell milk, juice, snacks and sandwiches 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The European vending machine industry, which has grown significantly and now has annual sales of about 26 billion euros, or $33 billion, hopes the trend will catch on.
Much recent growth came with the placing of vending machines in factories and offices, where employees took coffee breaks or lunch from machines. But as recession bit into Europe and factories and offices closed, that market has contracted.
At the same time, Europeans are looking for less expensive ways to eat out, and the automat is far less expensive than a white-tablecloth restaurant.
“These are developments that we are watching,” said Luciano Iannuzzi, chief executive of Argenta in Carpi, Italy, a large vending operator with about 120,000 machines.
The idea for a pizza robot came to Mr. Torghele after he worked in California in the mid-1990s creating a fresh pasta manufacturer. “At food courts I saw a trend toward vending machines,” he said at his office in this mountain town. “In fast food, I saw pizza everywhere.”
With backing from a Dutch investment fund, his own capital and money from friends, he set to work. A plan to simply miniaturize industrial technology for producing frozen pizza failed, but by 2003 Mr. Torghele had produced a machine ready to be tested in Chicago and shown at a trade fair in Orlando, Fla.
That same year, with the help of Unilever, the British-Dutch food giant, he test-marketed 20 machines in Germany. “We had a bicycle,” he said. “Now we had to pedal.”
Lucio Tonina/SITOS
The Let’s Pizza vending machine at a shopping mall in Trentino, Italy. It can turn flour, water, tomato sauce and fresh ingredients into hot pizza in a few minutes for a price as low as US$4.50.
The machine Mr. Torghele and his engineers produced is outfitted with little windows so the customer can watch the pizza being made. As in the Charlie Chaplin film “Modern Times” (in miniature and without Chaplin) wheels turn and gears grind. The customer presses a button to choose one of four varieties — margherita (plain cheese and tomato sauce), bacon, ham or fresh greens. A plastic container dumps flour into a drum resembling a tiny washing machine; a squirt of water follows, and the drum goes into a spin cycle, forming a blob of dough that is then pressed flat to form a 12-inch disk.
Tomato paste is squirted onto the dough and cheese is added before it is lifted into a small infrared oven. The baked pizza then slips onto a cardboard tray and out into the customer’s waiting hands. Mr. Torghele says the pizza will cost as little $4.50, depending on the variety.
It is not surprising that the new drive to offer fresh-made food is coming from Italy. Italians may be legendary for long lunches of pasta and wine, but they also lead Europe in vending machines, with more than 614,000 installed, compared with 593,000 in France and 562,000 in Britain, according to the European Vending Association in Brussels.
Much of Italy’s strength in vending comes from coffee. An Italian coffee vending machine may offer up to 18 different varieties, including espresso, cappuccino, ristretto, lungo and macchiato.
But with coffee markets increasingly saturated, machine manufacturers are casting about for new products to push, like books, DVDs, scarves and handkerchiefs, even model cars and trains.
Operators are also increasingly offering fresh produce, like apples, and other healthy food at schools and fitness centers.
“Vending hasn’t arrived at the end of the road,” said Mr. Iannuzzi, 52, of Argenta. “It’s mature, but it’s growing.”
Argenta reflects the opportunities that vending offered to investors. In 2005, Argenta was snapped up by Advent International, a British equity fund, which turned around and sold it in late 2007 to an Italian fund, Cognetas. In that time, Argenta had doubled its annual revenue, to $260 million, partly through acquisitions and partly through growth.
Now, with the economic crisis spreading across Europe, the industry faces a different landscape. On the one hand, as factories close, potential vending machine sites disappear. On the other hand, as consumers find themselves with less cash, the lower-priced items in vending machines become attractive.
Where does this leave Mr. Torghele and his pizza machine? Initially, he thought the United States would be his primary market, but he learned that market would be hard to penetrate. Instead, when his machine goes into regular production this summer, he will be focusing on Italy and its neighbors. But vending machine prices there average about $2,600, and his machine will sell for $32,000.
Still, experts in the business are not discouraging. “You have to have a location; you have to understand where to go with that machine,” Mr. Iannuzzi said. “But there is a future for that.”

| URGENT ITALIAN LANGUAGE PETITION |
Please see the letter below form the President of Co.As.It. Sydney:
1 December 2008
Dear Friend/Colleague,
RE: URGENT PETITION
I write on behalf of the Board of Directors to seek your support. The Italian Government is proposing a dramatic reduction in funding for the promotion of Italian [more] language and culture abroad of up to 50% starting from 2009.
If this decision is confirmed the teaching of Italian in Australia via Co.As.It.'s Insertion classes in State and Catholic Schools will be dramatically affected with large reductions of students learning Italian to be estimated in the thousands.
It remains difficult at this time to assess the exact future repercussions, however we are sure that the position of the Italian language, culture and community itself, for which generations of Italians worked hard to achieve in Australia will be placed at great risk.
The General Committee of Italians Abroad (CGIE), a worldwide representative body, has organised a petition to be presented to the Italian Government to appeal such a decision. Â In order to sign this electronic petition you need to visit the following website: Â http://firmiamo.it/petizionemondialecontroitaglidellafinanziaria
The website is in Italian and we hope you will be able to complete it. Please note that one of the compulsory fields is labelled CAP. In Italian CAP stands for Postcode (Codice Avviamento Postale), please enter your Australian postcode and AUS if you wish.
I kindly ask you to share this letter with family, friends, colleagues, students and anyone who shares an interest in the maintenance and promotion of Italian language and culture in Australia. I thank you in advance for your support.

| ROME NOT BUILT IN A DAY, EVEN FOR GOOGLE EARTH |
A computerised reconstruction of Ancient Rome viewed from above the Circus Maximus.
GOOGLE Earth has added a new function to its 3D map collection: time travel.
Launched in the Italian capital this week, Rome has become the first ancient city documented on Google Earth, allowing internet users to visit the sprawling city as it would have appeared in 320AD when Emperor Constantine ruled [more] over the city's 1 million inhabitants. See ancient Rome in 3D. A new high tech theatre will give tourists a deeper look at life in the Italian capital in the ancient past. Using a physical model put together by archaeologists between 1933 and 1974, the virtual ancient Rome was recreated by an international team including the University of Virginia and the University of California, Los Angeles. Professsor Bernard Frischer, of the University of Virginia, said the project took a decade to pull together using laser scans of today's ruined monuments and advice from archaeologists. It was completed last year. He said the program, a 'virtual time machine', would prove an invaluable tool for the study of ancient Rome and the Roman Empire. The computer-generated images allow visitors to dart across town without the hassle of traffic which clogs contemporary streets, cross the Tiber River, inspect the engraved marble facades and enter 11 buildings including the Senate, Forum of Julius Caesar and the Colosseum. The city's 21-kilometre-long walls have been re-created and pop-up windows provide information on more than 250 sites. In all, almost 7000 buildings have been re-created — a significant improvement on the roughly 300 original ruins that still stand. Google Earth chief technology advocate Michael Jones said it was the culmination of years of work by scholars, historians, artists and others. More than 400 million people have downloaded Google Earth since 2005. See http://earth.google.com/rome/Story by Bridie Smith of www.theage.com.au |

| Ferragosto’08 will be held on Sunday, 17 August 2008 between 10am and 4pm on Great North Road, Five Dock, NSW. Ferragosto is the City of Canada Bay’s largest and most popular community [more] festival attracting over 50,000 people.
